    • What is the definition of 'conformity'?
      Changes in individuals' behaviours and/or beliefs as a result of real or imagined group pressure.
    • What are the three types of conformity?
      1. Compliance
      2. Identification
      3. Internalisation
    • What is compliance?
      When individuals publicly change their beliefs and behaviours to be in line with the group, but revert to original beliefs and behaviours in private.
    • Is compliance short term or long term?
      Short term.
    • What is identification?
      When individuals adjust their public, and possibly private, behaviour and belief systems to those of the group because group membership is desirable. When the group is no longer seen as valuable, behaviour may revert back.
    • Is identification short term or long term?
      Short term - while the individual is a part of the group.
    • What is internalisation?
      Individuals publicly and privately change their behaviours and belief systems to go along with the group as we accept their values into our own cognitions.
    • Is internalisation short term or long term?
      Long term.
    • What type of social influence does compliance link to?
      Normative Social Influence (NSI)
    • What type of social influence does internalisation link to?
      Informational Social Influence (ISI)
    • What type of conformity is the most superficial and least permanent level of conformity?
      Compliance.
