Rock types

• there are 3 types of rock

  • igneous
  • sedimentary
  • matamorphic
• Sedimentary

  • formed from weathered rock fragments and sediments that have been eroded, transported, deposited, compacted and cemented
  • they have destinct layers
• igneous

  • formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava
  • cooling allows mineral crystals to form
  • most igneous rocks are crystalline
• an intrusive igneous rock is formed underground from magma
• an extrusive igneous rock is fromed abouve ground by lava
• metamorphic

  • result of transformation in a pre-existing rock
  • original rock is subjected to high heat and pressure which causes the rock to fold and deform
• pourosity


  a measure of a rocks ability to hold fluid
• permeability


  a measure of the amount of water allowed to pass through a rock
