Moments and Rotation

Cards (5)

  • what is a pivot point
a point which it can rotate about, but cannot move away from
  • objects and pivot points
if a force is applied along a line passing through the pivot - the object does not rotate and is just held still
if there is a distance between the pivot and the line of action of the force, the object rotates around the pivot, in the direction of the force applied
  • equation for the moment of a force
moment of a force = force x perpendicular distance
  • an example of moments:
pressing your foot down on a bike pedal, causes a moment about the pivot, turning the pedal arms
  • when is equilibrium reached?
sum of anticlockwise moments = sum of clockwise moments
