  • criminal judge's role is to: 
    • Listen to evidence: Judges hear evidence in criminal cases and make rulings based on the information presented 
    • Pass sentences: Judges pass sentences for those convicted of crimes 
    • Uphold the rule of law: Judges uphold the principle of criminal justice and the rule of law 
    • Resolve disputes: Judges resolve disputes over issues of law and fact
  • Most often a judge hears them on their own, deciding them by finding facts and applying the relevant law. There may be argument presented about the facts, and about what that law actually is. When the argument has finished the judge will give a reasoned judgment.
