  • What are the reasons paid work has led to more equal roles?
    • (Gershunny)- Women who worked full-time did less housework & this trend shows a gradual change in the values of society.
    • (Sullivan)- Compiling data nationally in 1975, 87’ and 97’, there was found to be a general shif towards greater equality with men doing more domestic labour.
    • (Crompton)- Agreed with Sullivan but believed this trend was down to women having more power in the household.
    • (Man-yee-kan)- income age & education have a positive or negative correlation with the amount of housework women do.
  • What are the reasons paid work hasn’t led to more equal roles?
    (Ferri & smith)- women working has had little impact on the domestic chores a they must do, so instead she now has a ‘dual burden’ of being an economic provider and the person who maintains the household, fathers took over childcare in only 4% of cases.
    (Morris)- When women were at work and men were unemployed they still did no work at home as it was ‘emasculating’.
    (Marsden)- ‘Triple Shift’ - women not only have paid work now but they also must do the housework and provide emotion work by looking after the family.
