Ethical issues

• Informed consent; get permission

  = sign consent form
• Deception; misleading

  = at the end give a debrief with true aims
• Protection from harm; risk

  = be given the right to withdraw

  = researcher should provide counselling if participants have been e.g. distressed
• Privacy and confidentiality; right to control

  = if personal details are held these must be protected (legal requirement)

  = researchers refer to participants using numbers or false names

  = participants personal data cannot be shared with other researchers
