Psychology- The brain and neuropsychology

Cards (11)

  • What is the central nervous system made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord
  • What is the spinal cord?
A long structure running down our backs. It carries incoming and outgoing messages between the brain and the body
  • What is the purpose of the peripheral nervous system?
It receives and sends messages to the central nervous system. It is divided into the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system
  • What is the autonomic nervous system
A system that we have no control over. It co-ordinates functions such as breathing, heart rate and digestion.
  • What is the somatic nervous system
A system which we have control over, it involves our movements. The only bit of the SNS that we don’t have control over is our reflexe.
  • What is the nervous system?
A network of neurons and fibres which transmit nerve impulses between parts of the body
  • True or false? The parasympathetic and the sympathetic nervous system can both be activated at the same time?
    False
  • What is the sympathetic nervous system?
When the body is in a physiological arousal in preparation for fight or flight mode
  • What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
When the body is in a state of rest and there is no threat to us.
  • What is the James-Lange theory of emotion?
Emotion is the result of physiological responses to stimuli. (The physiological changes trigger the emotion)
  • What is a neuron?
Neurons are nerve cells that are responsible for sending electrical and chemical signals around the body
