  • Safety is the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss.
  • Reasons for safety include preventing accidents and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Safety rules in biochemistry labs include general rules, housekeeping, dress code, personal protection, chemical safety, and electrical safety.
  • Laboratory safety symbols and hazard signs are used to indicate potential hazards.
  • Preparing and storing solutions, chemical disposals, and handling spills are important aspects of laboratory safety.
  • In case of personal injury or fire, specific protocols should be followed.
  • Different classes of fire extinguishers are used for different types of fires.
  • Performing laboratory tests poses a potential health hazard to medical laboratory scientist students.
  • Contact with chemicals, blood, and blood products is potentially hazardous.
  • Precautions should be taken to protect oneself, clients, and the environment.
  • All samples should be treated as potentially infectious.
  • General laboratory safety rules include listening to instructors, reading instructions carefully, not touching equipment without instruction, keeping pathways clear, cleaning up benches, placing materials back in their proper place, pushing in chairs, and washing hands before leaving the lab.
  • Lab performance will be considered as part of the participation grade.
  • Cell phones must be stored away from the lab benches, e.g. in the students' backpacks.
  • Personal business, such as talking on the phone and/or texting, will not be tolerated during lab time.
  • Students using their phone may be asked to leave and will lose credit for the lab.
