  • The Mausoleum of Augustus is a large important structure built in Rome to house the body of Augustus and his family when they died.
  • The Mausoleum was inspired by architecture of the Egyptians and their pyramids and architecture of Cyrus the Great of Persia and Alexander the Great of Masadonia and conqueror of the world.
  • It was a great circular building measuring to 45 m tall with concentric walls. At the entrance stood 2 obelisks stolen from Egypt, one of which can now see seen in the Vatican and Res Gustave was in between these two.
  • There was corridor from the entry to a chamber where the urns were held. Augustus’s urn would have been placed in the centre and higher than everyone else’s to show is importance and high status.
  • Augustus’s mindset behind building the Mausoleum was to show his great importance and achieve Kleos. He wanted the generations of Romans and Roman emperors after him to remember him and be inspired by his greatness, and leave a mark on Rome so he can be thought of as the best emperor to exist Rome for years to come.
