  • what is strength (cheap)
    -Flooding is cheap compared to all other forms of phobia therapy
    -Although individual flooding sessions are usually longer than SD sessions, fewer sessions are needed overall which equals a lower cost to the patient
    -Thus the cost-effective nature of the therapy means that it has beneficial economic implications
  • What is a weakness (traumatic)
    -Flooding can be traumatic for the patient so it raise ethical issues
    -this means patients are mire likely to drop out and as such flooding has a high attrition rate
  • What is weakness? (less effective in complex phobias)
    -Flooding is less effective with more complex phobias, such as social phobias 
    -Social phobias involve a variety of different interpersonal interactions dependent on the occasion
    -To be able to navigate the different demands of social events takes some skill and training which flooding cannot provide
  • What is another weakness? (risk of spontaneous recovery)
    -when extinguished phobia suddenly returns
    -may be bc flooding sessions are not very long and the therapy doesn't replace the fear with a different response just with no response
    -therefore not effective in the long run
  • What is a strength? (Wolpe 1960)
    -treated an adolescent girl with agoraphobia by putting her into the back of a car and driving her around for 4 hrs
    -her fear initially rose to hysterical panic but then receded by the end of the journey
    -therefore there is research support
