  • slavery had ended due to the 13th amendment.
  • many became sharecroppers - basically slaves but with more freedom.
  • still treated like 'property' and were lynched for crimes that weren't even crimes - AA whistling at white woman.
• Little Rock 9 - 1957

  1. 9 black students of all different ages applied to the previously Little Rock high school.
  2. the 9 students were greeted by hostile and threatening crowds every day at school.
  3. governor faubus used state troopers to stop the 9 students coming to school.
  4. president Eisenhower intervenes to use the state troops to protect the 9 students so they can attend school.
  5. at the end of the school year 1 of the 9 students graduated - Ernest green.
  6. governor faubus responded by shutting the school completely down so the remaining 8 couldn't attend.
