Acient Greek Philosophy

Cards (6)

  • Leucippus
    The founder of atomism
  • Atomism
The idea that matter is made up of tiny indivisible particles called atoms.
It suggested that these atoms move in a void or empty space which allows them to combine and form different materials.
Believe that motion is intrinsic to atoms and that they constant movement leads to interactions in the formation of substances
  • Democritus
The developer of atomism who is considered the laughing philosopher.
Atoms are eternal indestructible and indivisible they cannot be split or destroyed.
Atoms vary in size shape and weight, these differences in atomic particles explain the variety of materials in the world. For instance rough and jagged atoms form solid hard substances while smooth and round atoms might form liquids or soft substances
  • The void
Emphasize the importance of void as a necessary space for atomic motion and interaction
  • Mechanistic view

Argue that all phenomena including life and thought could be explained by the physical arrangements and motions of atoms
  • Materialism
Democritus proposed that the universe is made entirely of atoms and void rejecting supernatural explanation for natural processes.
