Advantages and disadvantages

• Advantages of stem cells

  . Can be used to replace damaged or diseased body parts.

  . Unwanted embryos from fertility clinics could be used as they would otherwise be discarded (destroyed- no longer of use)

  . There is research into the process of differentiation
• Disadvantages

  . We don't full understand the process of differentiation- hard to control stem cells to form cells we desire.

  . Removal of stem cells destroy the embryo.

  . People may have religious or ethical objections- interference with the natural process of reproduction.

  . If growing stem cells are contaminated with a virus, it can be transferred to the individual. (viral transmission)

  . Money and time could be better spent in other areas of medicine
