  • Predicting:
    there is no predicting when a tsunami causing earthquake will strike however early warning systems have been put in place so is now possible to warn people of an approaching tsunami within minutes
  • protection:
    • Buildings designed with raised, open foundations and made of strong materials such as concrete are less likely to be damaged by the force of the water during a tsunami
    • In some places tsunami walls have been built around settlements to protect them.

    • evacuation routes on the coastlines indicating by tsunami signs and signalled by sirens ensure the safety of coastal settlements.
    • ocean data from DART (Deep-ocean Assessment and reporting of Tsunami) buoys moored to sensors on the sea floor monitor pressure shifts caused by a passing tsunami back to early warning centres.
