Cards (7)

  • What do New Right believe?
Based on the idea that the state must not dictate to individuals how to dispose of their own property. So governments should try and encourage competition, privatize state-run businesses
  • What theory do Chubb and Moe come up with?
    Consumer choice
  • What do Chubb and Moe believe?
State run education has failed because
    • it hasn't created equal opportunities and has failed the needs of the disadvantaged
    • it is inefficient because it fails to produce pupils with the skills needed for the economy
    • Private schools deliver a higher quality of education because unlike state schools, they are answerable to the consumer - parent
  • What statistics do Chubb and Moe use?
the achievement of 60,000 pupils from low-income families in 1,015 state and private high schools. Low income pupils consistently do 5% better in private schools compared to state
  • Based on their findings what do Chubb and Moe propose?
Introduction of a market system in state education which would put education in the hands of the consumers - parent. They argue this would allow consumers to shape school to their own needs.
  • What are the 2 important roles for the state according to New Right theorists?
    • the state imposes a framework on schools within which they have to compete eg. publishing Ofsted reports and league tables
    • The state ensures that schools transmit a shared culture eg. national curriculum
  • Evaluation:
    • Gerwitz and Ball (1994) argue competition between schools benefit the MC who can use their cultural and economic capital
    • Critics argue the real cause of low education is inadequate funding of schools and social inequality
