What are the strengths of Romanian Orphan Studies?
Real-worldapplication - key workers in orphanages
Longitudinal studies
What are the limitations of Romanian Orphan Studies?
Population validity
Lackinternal validity
Strength = real-word application - key workers in orphanages
Romanianorphanstudies have enhanced our understanding of the effects of institutionalisation - has been applied to improving the lives of childrenplaced in institutions
E.g. orphanages and children’shomes now avoid having largenumbers of caregivers for eachchild and instead ensure that a muchsmallernumber of peopleplay a centralrole for the child - this person is known as a keyworker
This allows the children the chance to develop normal attachments and helpsavoiddisinhibitedattachment
Also considerableeffort is made to ensure that looked-afterchildren are not put into institutionalcare and provide them with fostercare or adoptioninstead
Strength = longitudinal studies
Allows the researcher to follow the samepeople over a longperiod of timeallowing for changes to be observed in how institutionalisation has impacted the children’sattachment
Without suchstudies we may mistakenlyconclude that there are majoreffectsdue to earlyinstitutionalcare, whereas some of thesestudies show that the effectsmaydisappear with suitablehigh-qualitycare
Limitation = population validity
This research may lackpopulationvalidity as the Romanianorphanages were nottypical of otherorphanages
The fact that the conditions in the orphanages of Romania were sobadmeans that the resultsfound may not be able to compare to otherinstitutionalisedchildrenaround the world as they may have not been through the sameprocedures and environments as those of Romania‘sorphanages
For example, in the UKinstitutions have higherstandards of care
Therefore, we must be carefulmakinggeneralisations from this research
Limitation = lack internal validity
Manyorphanstudieslackcontrol over participant variables which could be playing a role
Many of the orphans could have experiencedneglect, abuse or bereavementbefore they were institutionalisedleading to trauma which could have led to developmental issuesrather than being institutionalised -> it is very hard to observe the effects of institutionalisation in isolation because the children were dealing with multiplefactors
HOWEVER - In these the infants were institutionalisedprettymuch from birth so possible to studyinstitutionalisationwithout these confounding variables
