What are the strengths of the influences of early attachments on later relationships?
Real-worldapplication
Abundance of researchsupport
What are the limitations of influences of early attachments on later relationships?
Research is correlational
Use of questionnaires and interviews
Strength = real-world application
Understanding how early attachmentinfluencesadult relationships can be useful as it can lead to interventions for those with poorerqualityrelationships with parents
E.g. relationship counselling is available to help preventissues with adultrelationships -> research can lead to programmes that improve the life of those who may have had insecure attachments as a child
Strength = abundance of research support
McCarthy (1999) wanted to see if there was a relationshipbetween an infant’sattachmenttype and their adultrelationships
They found that securelyattachedindividuals had the bestfriendships and relationships
This increases the validity and reliability
HOWEVER - Zimmermanet al. (2000)longitudinalstudy of Germanchildren found infantattachmenttype was not a goodpredictor of attacgments in adolescence and that life events were moreimportant
This suggestscontinuity may onlyapply when seriouslifeevents have not had an impact on the child
Limitation = research is correlational
The researchlinking the internal working model/ early attachment with laterrelationshipexperiences is correlationalrather than experimental - can’t claim that the relationship between earlyattachment and later love style is one of cause and effect
Could be possible that laterlovestyles are caused by somethingdifferent such as an infant’stemperament - this affects the way a parentresponds
This may be a determiningfactor in infantattachmenttype
This means that researcherscannotconfidentlyclaim that the internalworkingmodeldetermineslaterrelationships
Limitation = use of questionnaires and interviews
Veryfewlongitudinal studies
Insteadmoststudies make use of interviews or questionnaires to assessattachmenttype - depends on the respondentbeinghonest and having a realistview of their ownrelationships
Also requires them to be retrospective which may also lackvalidity as their memories may not be entirelyaccurate
HOWEVER - some longitudinalstudies have shown resultsconsistent with Hazan and Shaver
Simpson et al. (2007) found securelyattachedinfants were rated as havinghighersocial competence as children, were closer to friends at age16 and were emotionallyattached to their romantic partners in earlyadulthood
