• episodic memory 


  memories of personal experiences - can be a recent experience

  conscious - can be recalled and thought about consciously

  declarative - can be explained verbally

  example = first day at school
• procedural memory 


  memory for how things are done (actions & skills) - muscle memory

  unconscious - often automatic, do not require conscious recall, may be difficult to inspect consciously

  non-declarative - difficult to explain verbally

  example = how to swim
• semantic memory 


  memories of knowledge/facts - general or specific knowledge about ourselves and the world
