• Peterson and Peterson (duration of STM)

  - each student was given a consonant and 3 digit number to remember

  - student was asked to count backwards from 3 digit syllable (prevents mental rehearse, as that increases their memory of the syllable)

  LIMITATION= lacked external validity, didn't reflected everyday memory

  STM duration is about 18s
• Bahrick (duration of LTM)

  - studied people aged 17-74

  - photo recognition test

  - free recall test (recall names of those graduating)

  - tested 48yrs after graduation, more accurate with photo recognition test comp. to free recall

  STRENGTH= high external validity
