    police have a duty to protect people and property from crime. This shows the police are effective in protecting the public as they are often involved in community policing which means that police maintain presence in local communities to deter criminals. For example, many schools have “campus cops” to maintain safety of pupils.

    They use the different departments and resources they have to investigate a crime that is suspected to have happened and may gather evidence through witness statements, CCTV footage, fingerprints etc. The evidence is used to arrest someone and to take the matter to court. For example, the CID branch are mainly responsible for detecting crime

    This means that the police will often launch campaigns to make people more aware of crime. It either targets the general public to help them prevent becoming a victim or targets potential perpetrators to stop them committing crimes. They may do this through social media campaigns and community policing. For example, Police Scotland often use social media such as Twitter and Facebook to make people more aware of scams
