yom kippur

• ends the ten days of awe
• decision g-d makes about a person's life during the past year
• SOWA:

  "you shall practice self-denial; it is a law for all time" (lev 16:29-31)
• during time of jewish festival high priest makes animal sacrifice for sins of all jewish people sprinkling blood of sacrifice on ark of the covenant
• even though there is no animal sacrifice anymore, prayers on yom kippur act as an atonement for their sins
• yom kippur known as the ultimate shabbat
• • no food/drink (fasting)
  • no washing except washing of hands
  • no makeup or deodorant
  • no leather shoes
  • no sex
• yom kippur is about forgiveness from g-d
• doors of the holy ark are kept open to show how g-ds mercy is always available
• final synagogue service on yom kippur is when doors of holy ark closed and the books of g-ds judgement are closed
