  • as the planets orbit the sun:
    the gravitational force causes the planets to change direction constantly (it moves in circles around the sun)
    meaning the velocity is always changing - hence the force causes the planet to accelerate without increasing its speed
  • for a stable orbit:
    if the planet moves closer to the sun - gravitational attraction to the sun increases - force and acceleration increases - orbital speed of the planet increases
