• Augustus would also use religion to bolster his image and secure his rule.
• His positions would give him legitimacy as a religious voice, propaganda would portray him a pious restorer of Roman religion, he would also enact policies that helped secure the former.
• Also key for Augustus was the establishment of an Imperial Cult - worship of the Julio-Claudian family to legitimise his rule and his successors.
• Tacitus - 'there were no honours left for the Gods, now that Augustus chose to be worshipped with temples and godlike images by flamines and priests'
