MSM

Cards (4)

  • strength: research evidence Baddley 1966

Point: The MSM shows that STM & LTM are different due to research evidence
Evidence: Baddeley 1966 experiment found that we tend to mix up words with similar sounds when using out STM but mix up words with similar meaning when using LTM.
Explanation: this shows that the STM stores acoustically and LTM stores semantically which means both types of memory have 2 different stores supporting the structure of the MSM.
  • competing point: Campitelli 2015
point: not all psychologists agree that the STM and LTM are entirely separate
evidence: Campitelli 2015 suggested that the STM is part of the LTM and they aren't as separate as the MSM claims
explanation: this challenges the MSM and the separation of the LTM and STM and the STM could be something we focus our attention on in the LTM.
  • Weakness: the MSM only has one type of STM Shallece and warrington 1970
Point: The MSM states there is only one STM and it encodes one way which is acoustically which is not the case
Evidence: Shallace and warrington 1970 studied a patient with amnesia called KF who's STM for digits was poor when read aloud but when he read them to himself his STM was significantly better
Explanation: this case study highlights that there may be multiple components to the STM like verbal and non verbal encoding which the MSM doesn't account for. its giving incomplete explanation
  • application: improving memory
point: the MSM has practical application to improving memory
evidence: research shows that the limited capacity of the STM which is 7-9 items can be enhanced by chunking of 3. CAR LIP PEN
explanation: this shows the usefulness of the MSM in helping individuals improve memory retention
