  • strength: realistic theory of memory
point: provides a more realistic explanation for memory that other theories like the msm
evidence: RMT showed that memory is influenced by schemas and explains why individuals cant remember certain events accurately they adapt it a bit to fit in with their cultural or personal expectations.
explanation: this can be applied to EWT making the theory relevant as it explains memory in real life processes as it accounts for distortions made which is observed in recall.
  • competing argument: war and the ghosts study not standardised
point: war and the ghosts study lacked controlled methods
evidence: tasks given by Bartlett involved qualitative data collected and procedure was informal so it makes it hard for the study to be replicated
explanation: the undermines the validity of his findings as they may have been influenced by external factors and biases making it harder to generalize the theory to the wider population.
  • weakness: not all memories are recalled wrong
point; not all memory recalled is wrong and influenced by schemas
evidence: research has shown that when memories that are important they come up in flashes like flashbulb memories and when recalled they are recalled with accuracy
explanation: this suggests Bartlett's theory may overstate the extent to which schemas distort memory and fails to consider time where memory is reliable
  • Application: Loftus and Palmer 1974
    point: EWT
evidence: lotus and palmer 1974 demonstrated EWT is unreliable because schemas influence how information is recalled
explanation: this shows significant implications to real world especially legal system as unreliable EWT can cause wrongful convictions. so Bartlett's theory shows that schemas should be taken in to account as schemas can influence how information is recalled.
