  • Peer review
    assessment of scientific work by others and happens before the research is published
    • carried out by specialists in the same field who will not usually be revealed to the researchers
  • Purpose of peer review
    • validate the quality and accuracy of published work by looking at method, hypothesis and conclusions drawn
    • suggest improvements or completely withdraw work
    • responsible allocation of research funding
  • Criticisms of peer review
    • publication bias can occur when some results are discarded
    • established scientists are likely to be chosen as reviewers which may lead to anything that challenges their research or established ideas not getting published which can slow progress down
    • a reviewer may reject research in order to get their own research published
    • the process may be controlled by a ruling elite
