assessment of scientific work by others and happens before the research is published
carried out by specialists in the same field who will not usually be revealed to the researchers
Purpose of peer review
validate the quality and accuracy of published work by looking at method, hypothesis and conclusions drawn
suggest improvements or completely withdraw work
responsible allocation of research funding
Criticisms of peer review
publication bias can occur when some results are discarded
established scientists are likely to be chosen as reviewers which may lead to anything that challenges their research or established ideas not getting published which can slow progress down
a reviewer may reject research in order to get their own research published
