    One power of the High Court is to issue custodial sentences. As the cases sent to the High Court are always the most serious crimes in Scotland the Judge in the High Court is able to give a punishment they think is fair for the crime committed. This includes sending offenders to prison for life. For example, the High Courts has sentenced murders like Aaron Campbell and John Leatham to jail

    One power of the Sherriff Court is to issue Community Payback Orders (CPOs) This means that if the Sheriff can use an alternative to jail when the crime is serious but jail might not be the best option.     One power of Justice of the Peace Court is to issue fines. The JP does not have very much power to deal with offenders and the punishments are generally low impact because it deals with minor crimes. Issuing fines can help to prevent reoffending.
