the fight or flight response

Cards (7)

  • what does the fightor flight response reffer to ?
A series of psychological changes that occur in the body in response to a short.term stressor. There psychological changes prepare the body for physical action (to fight or flight). It occurs through the Sympathomedullary pathway.
  • First stage of FOF
A threat occurs which results in high activity in the amygdala. This is because the amygdala defects threats and processes emotions, particularly fear.
  • what does the amygdala do in the secon step of the FoF response
The amygdala sends a distress signal to the hypothalamus cwhich activates the SNS
  • what does the SNS do in the FOF
The SNS prepares the body for action by sending a messages to the adrenal gland. This cause the adrenal medulla to secerte adrenaline.
  • what does Adrenaline cause
    • Increased breathing and heart rate
    • Inhibition of salivation and digestion
    • Diversion of blood away from the skin towards the brain and skeletal muscles
    • increased sweating
    • pupil dilation (enlargement)
  • Evaluate the FOF response
❌️ it is merely useful in modern day life
❌️ it has resulted in negative implications for SA cases
❌️ it is typically a male response to danger
✅️it has resulted in practical application into our understanding and treatment of PTSD
  • What does the parasympathetic NS restore during the end of the fof ?
Once the threat has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system restores the body back to its resting state. It therefore produces the opposite physiological changes of those outlined above. For this reason, the actions of the PNS are often referred to as the rest and digest response.
