Gender in psychology

• Gender bias - the differential treatment or representation of men & women based on stereotypes rather than real differences
• Gender Bias AO3 :

  • Feminist Psychology - seeks to understand differences in behaviour & find a way to greater equality
  • Bias in research methods - male pts perform less well as male experimenters are more friendly to female pts - poor methodology
  • Reverse alpha bias - change preconceptions with research that overvalues women ( e.g. women are better learners )
  • Avoiding a beta bias - equal rights may disadvantage women because they have different needs

• Gender bias :

  • Gender bias - the differential treatment or representation of men & women based on stereotypes rather than real differences.
  • Androcentrism - centred on men.
  • Alpha bias - exaggerates differences between men & women. E.g. Freud's theories devalued women
  • Beta bias - underestimates gender differences . People assume what's true for men is also true for women. E.g. Fight or flight in men whereas tend & befriend in women
  • Universality - the aim to develop theories that apply to all people, which may include real differences
