Not due to chance (can be applied to the wider world).
What does Significance mean?
Being able to say with confidence that the results of your research are not due to chance.
What percentage % is the significance rate?
Psychology generally uses a 95% significance rate, meaning that there can be 5% probability that out problem is due to chance rather than the effect we are studying.
If the probability is less that 95%, it is likely that it is due to chance.
P < 0.05 = statistically significant = accept alternate hypothesis.
What are the 2 types of error and what do they mean?
Type 1 error: False positive
Accepting an alternate hypothesis when it should have been rejected.
Type 2 error: False negative
Accepting a null hypothesis when it should have been rejected.
