Inferential statistics

Cards (4)

  • What is Inferential statistics?
How valid our results are (accuracy).
Not due to chance (can be applied to the wider world).
  • What does Significance mean?
Being able to say with confidence that the results of your research are not due to chance.
  • What percentage % is the significance rate?
Psychology generally uses a 95% significance rate, meaning that there can be 5% probability that out problem is due to chance rather than the effect we are studying.
    • If the probability is less that 95%, it is likely that it is due to chance.
    • P < 0.05 = statistically significant = accept alternate hypothesis.
  • What are the 2 types of error and what do they mean?
    • Type 1 error: False positive
    • Accepting an alternate hypothesis when it should have been rejected.
    • Type 2 error: False negative
    • Accepting a null hypothesis when it should have been rejected.
