  • Causes of the revolt:
    1. northern Earls wanted England to be catholic (they’d lost land to Protestant Lords)
    2. Earl of Northumberland lost his status after Bloody Mary’s death
    3. Earls disliked Elizabeths appointments
    4. Earls were heavily influenced by the Pope
  • Lost land (Detail)
    They wanted Mary QoS to marry Duke of Norfolk and give them their land back
  • Appointments:
    Elizabeth appointed James Plinkington as Archbishop of Canterbury
    William Cecil and Robert Dudley (advisors) reduced the power Earls had over Elizabeth
  • Pope/Spain:

    Both promised the Earls troops and money if they rebelled and began the counter-reformation
  • Why it failed:
    1. Rebels were not unified on the plan and many backed out at the last minute——> Spanish troops never arrived in Hartlepool
    2. Elizabeth didn’t panic and raised 14000 men ——> which caused the Earls to flee
    3. Earl of Northumberland was executed in (1572)
