Cards (4)

  • what is interphase?

the longest phase of the cell cycle, with much metabolic activity, where the cell starts to get ready for division
  • what happens during interphase?
    • the newly formed cell grows and its organelles replicate, replacing those lost in the previous division
    • the DNA replicates so its quantity doubles
    • proteins (e.g. histones and enzymes) are synthesised during interphase, requiring energy from ATP
    • the chromosomes are not visible in the microscope because the nuclear material, chromatin, is dispersed throughout the nucleus
  • what is the ‘s’ phase?
    • its the synthesis phase
    • this is where the DNA is replicated
  • what is the status of the cells in interphase?
    they are biochemically very active
