    • One role/ aim of prison is Deterrence.
      (Put people off committing crimes)
      It is based on conditioning principles e.g. punishment.
      The unpleasant experience of prison is designed to put people off committing crime again (Individual deterrence)
      It also aims to send a message to members of society that crime will not be tolerated (general deterrence)
    • One role/aim of custodial sentencing is Rehabilitation.
      Prisons should provide programmes to aid reform & develop skills.
      These include:
      • Anger management
      • Behaviour modification
      • Drugs awareness
      • Access to education e.g. A Levels
      The aim is to reform the prisoners
