    Context:
    Edward has just met Mickey at the age of 7 and is surprised at his lack of vocabulary
    Analysis:
    Shows the difference between Edward’s and mickeys social class. Edward is surprised at mickeys swear words and that he is unfamiliar with the dictionary depicting Edward’s life as sheltered. Mickeys family are depicted as less educated that Edward’s highlighting the contrasting childhoods. Russell shows how the twins future is influenced from an early age due to social class
  • “It used to be just sweets and ciggies he gave me” Mickey Act 1
    Context:
    From when Mickey is struggling to pay his bills after losing his job. Edward has helped him financially since they were young. Edwards situation is better now
    Analysis:
    Mickey‘s low self esteem after losing his job is expressed through frustration towards Edward. This line alludes to Edwards better financial position due to his middle class upbringing. Although Edward is generous and kind, Mickey begins to find his help demeaning. Russell criticises the emotional and psychological effects of social class.
