The structure of the brain

• The outer of the brain is called the cerebrum or cortex and is the youngest part of the brain in terms of evolution
• The cortex has 4 parts which are responsible for sophisticated cognitive functions like memory vision and planning
• The frontal lobe is the largest and are prone to injury
• The frontal lobe is responsible for

  • Planning and organising
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Memory and attention
  • Controlling behaviour, emotions and impulses
• The parietal lobes

  • Integrate sensory information
  • Contains the primary sensory cortex which controls sensation (hot)
  • Tell which way is up
  • Help us to walk without bumping into things
• The temporal lobes are

  • Recognising and processing sound
  • Understanding and producing speech
  • Various aspects of memory
• The occipital lobe

  • Receives and processes visual infomation
  • Help perceiving shapes and colours
• The prefrontal cortex is part of the frontal lobe has several functions like inhibiting inappropriate responses decision making and motivational behaviour
