  • WESTERN CAPITALISM
    -free market economies - enabled competition and the free exchange of goods without government intervention, businesses would compete and any individual was free to join the competition if they wanted
    • capitalist democracy advocated for political freedom and the right of every citizen to have a choice of how their country was led(free elections)
  • USSR AND COMMUNISM
    -founded by Karl Marx who believed that capitalism led to the exploitation of the proletariat by the bourgeoisie in order to strengthen their economic dominance and political control
    -Lenin modified Marxist thinking by establishing leninismas the means by which Marxism would be transferred int o reality rather than a theory
    -when Stalin became leader of the USSR he modified leninism to suit his needs, he created the ‘cult of personality’ and promoted himself as the infallible interpreter of communist ideology

    both sides were certain that its ideology should dominate in as many nations as possible and each viewed the expansion of the other as a threat
