  • government responses to crime - new laws to reduce alcohol consumption
Another government response to tackle crime is the introduction of new laws in order to reduce alcohol consumption. The hope by the government was this would encourage people to drink less alcohol which would reduce the amount of crimes that are committed while under the influence of alcohol . For example, they introduced the Road Traffic Act 2014 which reduced the amount someone can drink then drive. They also made alcohol more expensive with the Minimum Unit Pricing Act in 2018
  • government responses to crime - violence reduction unit
One way the government has tried to tackle crime is through the introduction of the Violence Reduction Unit. In 2005, the Violence Reduction Unit was set up to address Scotland and Glasgow’s gang problems. The VRU was set up to tackle gang crime as if it was a disease, meaning the team targeted the root causes of gang crime before it happened rather than just punishing people. For example the VRU in Glasgow has employed former offenders to help them turn other gang members away from crime and get them the support they need.
