  • why are prisons effective - keep the public safe
    By locking away dangerous criminals the prisons help to keep the public safe from people who may be a harm to public safety. This is effective as the public can be reassured that the offender cannot commit further crimes and can go about their daily lives as normal as possible. Aaron Campbell will be kept in prison for at least 24 years after killing Alesha McPhail, which helps those who knew him to feel safer
  • why are prisons effective - rehabilitates offenders
    Prisons also rehabilitate and prepare the offender for life in the community as an attempt to prevent reoffending. This is effective as prisoners are taught skills which can help them to get a job on release and/or helping them with drug or alcohol addiction (through NHS programmes) which will help to prevent reoffending. For example, teaching offenders National 5s and Highers to allow them to get a good job when they leave prison
