  • why prison is ineffective - overcrowded
Overcrowding is a widespread problem in many Scottish prisons. This is ineffective as overcrowding can lead to problems such as increased fights and drug use. For example, HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow is operating at 140% capacity with more than 1,400 inmates.

It costs a lot of money to keep someone in prison that could be put to better use by being spent on healthcare or education. This is ineffective as that criminal might then end up on benefits costing tax payers more. According to the Scottish Government it cost £35,000 a year to keep an offender in prison in 2019. This is much more expensive than non-custodial methods of sentencing
