strengths

  • One strength of the biological approach is that is has support from case studies. One example is the study of Phineas Gage, who suffered a brain injury which caused a significant change in his personality. This was due to damage his frontal lobe - an area of the brain which controls emotions, decisions and thoughts. As this lobe had been damaged, he was now unable to make decisions or control his behaviour and emotions. This supports the biological approach as it suggests that brain structures (a biological feature) and abnormality in brain structures directly affects behaviour,
  • Another strength of the biological approach is that it has real life applications. For example, research into the neurochemical imbalances within the brain has found that drugs which increase or decrease certain neurochemicals have reduced the symptoms of some mental health disorders, such as depression and OCD. This has led to the development of successful drug treatments and therapies for these conditions, which have a significantly high success rate across a range of populations. Therefore, a strength of the biological approach is that it can be successfully applied to real life issues.
