limitations

Cards (2)

  • One limitation of the biological approach is that it is reductionist. The biological approach argues that all human behaviour is driven by our genes, brain structures and neurochemistry, which is an example of biological reductionism. This is a limitation as it can be argued that we cannot fully understand human behaviour without taking into account the influence of other factors, including cognitive, emotional and cultural factors. According to other approaches (such as the behaviourist approach and the cognitive approach), these factors are argued to have more or equal influence
  • Another limitation of the biological approach is that it is deterministic. For example, the biological approach would argue that all aspects of a person's behaviour, personality and choices are due to inherited or unchangeable factors – which is an example of hard determinism. This argues that we as individuals do not have active control over our own decisions and actions. This is a limitation as it suggests that people who have inherited “undesirable" traits will have to take responsibility for behaviour that they have no control over, and that an individual has no free will to make positive
