Genre and style terms

• genre = a category that defines the type of story, themes, and conventions used, eg horror, comedy, or film noir
• film noir = a style characterized by dark themes, high contrast lighting, and a sense of moral ambiguity, often featuring crime plots
• realism = a style focussed on creating a life-like portrayal of people, events, and settings, often with naturalistic acting and sets
• surrealism = a style that emphasizes the irrational, dreamlike, and bizarre, often challenging viewers' perception of reality
• hybrid genre = a film genre that blends elements from 2 or more distinct genres, creating a unique category that incorporates aspects of each genre involved. These genres are characterized by the co-existence of conventions, themes, styles, or narrative structures from multiple genres
