  • What was the main principle of his theory?
    Changes in thinking (cognition) over time.
    Children think differently from adults.
  • What do stages mean within his study?
    Different kinds of logical thinking occur at each stage.

    Mental structures containlung knowledge. Schemas become more complex through assimilation and accommodation.
  • What is assimilation?

    Adding new info to an existing schema.
  • What is accommodation?

    Receiving new info that changes our understanding so a new schema is formed.
  • What is a positive evaluation of this theory? 

    Real world application.
    The theory has helped change classroom teaching so it is now more activity based.
  • What is a negative evaluation of this study?
    The sample.
    Middle class Swiss children were used so the theory may not be universal.
