    Jekyll is an "established gentleman" but he is guilty of "irregularities" sin and desire that he keeps hidden, however Hyde doesn't conceal this nature and portrays the true identity of Jekyll

    Hyde is the uncivilised version of Jekyll who he creates to hide his sins and protect his reputation
    "sea of liberty"-he associates Hyde with freedom as he can freely commit crime and still hide behind the identity of Hyde

    "I felt younger, lighter, happier in body"-rule of 3 symbolises how his evil side entices Jekyll and he becomes a slave to his desires.
    Suggests how he doesn't need to feel the weight of responsibility because his reputation is being concealed by Hyde

    "all human beings as we meet them are commingled out of good and evil...Hyde is pure evil" shows it is okay to be a mixture of good and bad however once you become over powered by evil nature that is when bad things begin to happen

    Jekyll acknowledges his evil side to be Hyde and fears he is addicted to his evil tendencies
