  • Lateral collateral ligament injury:
    • Less common than a medial collateral ligament injury
    • Can occur in combination with other posterolateral complex structures including the peroneal nerve - careful neurovascular assessment is required
  • Symptoms:
    • Mechanism of injury may be a direct blow to the medial aspect of the knee, or other varus stress
    • Usually acute onset of lateral knee pain
    • Cessation of activities
  • Signs:
    • Tenderness over the lateral collateral ligament at the lateral joint line
    • Swelling/effusion
    • Instability or pain on varus stress test
    • May be paraesthesia or weakness of the lateral lower limb
