Wickham begins to deceive everyone in Meryton as soon as he arrives - mainly about Mr Darcy to try and get Elizabeth in his side and seem like the victim.
Wickham - ‘His attentions to Miss King.’
Wickham quickly moves on from Elizabeth to Mary King because he wants to marry her for money. This shows his ambition for security, but also his greed.
Mr Darcy - ‘I certainly have not the talent which some people possess of conversing easily with those I have never seen before.’
Shows he is not as ‘high and conceited’ as he leads everyone to believe - intentionally or not. Conveys he is shy.
Mr Darcy - ’Said with a haughty composure.’
He is not intentionally trying to rude - he is adopting a detached tone to create a facade, to cover up the fact that he is shy.
