independentprint magazine, female target audience- published by dutch publishers Gert Jonkers
An alternative magazine aimed at a female target audience aimed at a niche audience of middle class/wealthy middle aged women.
the gentlewoman celebrates modern women of style and purpose. its fabulous biannual magazine offers a fresh and intelligent perspective on fashion focused on personal style, the way women actually think and dress
its representation of femininity reflects an aspect of the feminist movement which celebrates- authenticity and empowerment
target audience- women- 32- high income- constructs an alternative representation of femininity in contrast with other women's magazines
the focus is on women as- artists, entrepeneurs, athletes, innovators, femaleempowerment is a major theme,
front cover- minimalistcover design, Gentlewoman uses a deliberately alternative design to other magazines aimed at young women, this is evident from the front cover with its minimalist use of text and cover lines and large blank spaces throughout the pages of the magazine.
enigma codes- the cover stories create mystery and enigma with the lack of cover lines compared with most other magazines that usually give more information and details about the content. the verbal enigma codes on the front cover give very little away and create a sense of mystery to encourage the reader to read the contents.
front cover- the typography is a combination masthead title with modern contemporary sans serif style subtitles. this had the effect of making the magazine feel slightly home-spun, personal, arty, and craft like.
the magazine encourages its nichefemale audience to identify with the inspirational women featured in the magazine. also encourages its audience to be inspired by the content and aspire to seek out their own identity.
stuart hallreception- preferred- readers completely agree with dominant ideology of empowerment in women
isabella tree- an educated, older, white woman who inherited farm land with her husband. she mostly fits the axis of privilege (bell hooks) and maybe this is why she is featured in the gentlewoman.
'under threat' 'damaged' 'chemical use' all suggest that we need to change in order to save the trees, help the environment e.g. listen to isabella tree
isabella tree isn't facing us in her image- is this due to beauty ideals and her being older?
Scarlett Johansson issue was released in spring and summer 2021- during the covid pandemic
the gentlewoman magazine could be a satire/sister to the gentleman's magazine, one of Britain's oldest newspapers
there is a hyperreal quality to Johansson’s makeup with the use of thick eyeshadow, full lipstick, and the dark colour and shape of her eyebrows. This stylised representation alludes to her role as Black Widow, the high-kicking superhero from the Marvel cinematic universe.
The title uses a variation of the Futura typeface. The geometric letters and the distinctive “l” and “h” shapes create a feeling of modernity and progress.
Liesbet Van Zoonen - 'competition, individualism, ruthlessness' are masculine traits
can also be seen as part of a movement responding to the idea of 'internet fatigue' where people still demand a physical print magazine
published by Gert Jonkers and Jop Van Bennekom
the focus of the magazine is women as artists, entrepeneurs, atheletes and innovators- femaleempowerment is a major theme
disequilibrium-the reading of the front cover creates anticipation for the reader due to the minimalist text causing mystery and enigma for the unenlightened reader, equilibrium this can be reached again with the reader's curiosity fulfilled by reading on
rebrands consumerism as an ethical movement
the website contains a library of the articles on profiled people for each issue, these are free to read- hesmondhalgh-cross media
although the main image is a little more experimental than most of the magazine's covers, the rest of the page follows The Gentlewoman'shouse style with the masthead positioned at the top and the cover star's name at the bottom. The messages is clear- Johansson is 'the gentlewoman' and this is her story
the magazine also offers a sense of community and belonging through the Gentlewoman club, which organises exclusive events like walking tours and screenings for its 40000+ members.
The indep owners of the gentlewoman have not created one mag to suit all- the gentlewoman diverse reps,
the gentlewoman- same status as a man,
Ramla Ali- only focused on supporting boxing for women, interviewing format, not her canning town background working up as a poor woman
