Banquo's Function

• Used as a foil for Macbeth, to provide a contrast with him
• He is the conscience of the play and Macbeth
• He is a model of loyalty and highlights the strength of the bond a subject should have with their king
• He represents more conventional fears, attitudes and suspicions surrounding the supernatural
• His treatment by Macbeth reminds us of the coldness of ambition
