  • Duncan receives reports of the battle between his army and enemy forces. Notably, he is not actively leading the fighting himself. He hears how MacDonald and the Thane of Cawdor have betrayed him, and also how bravely Macbeth fought to defend him
  • Duncan expresses surprise that the Thane of Cawdor has betrayed him and he has him executed
  • Duncan decides to give the title Thane of Cawdor to Macbeth to reward his loyalty
  • Later at Macbeth's castle, he announces that his son, Malcolm, will succeed him as king
  • Duncan is murdered by Macbeth as he sleeps
