enzymes

Cards (7)

  • what is activation energy?
Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy required to bring about a reaction.
  • what is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a protein that acts as a catalyst, increasing the rate of a biochemical reaction.
It does this by lowering the activation energy.
  • what do enzymes catalyse?
    Both intracellular and extracellular reactions
  • what are intracellular reactions?

take place inside of the cell
  • what are extracellular reactions?

take place outside of the cell
  • what is an active site?
An active site is the region on an enzyme where a substrate fits to catalyse a reaction.
The shape of the active site is determined by the enzyme’s tertiary structure.
  • describe the induced fit model of enzyme action
The substrate starts to bind to the active site.
Then, the shape of the active site changes so that the active site and substrate are complementaryThis puts stress on the bonds in the substrate and makes them easier to break. This lowers the activation energy.
